Recently Married?

October 30, 2009

Have you recently gotten married?  Are you planning on getting married by the end of this year?  Here are some tips to make your tax preparation go more smoothly next year:

  1. File form SS-5 with the Social Security Administration(SSA).  This will notify the SSA that you’ve changed your name and will ensure that your name and SSN match when you file your tax return.  You can access this form on SSA’s website by clicking here, or by calling 800-772-1213.  You can also receive the form at any local SSA office.
  2. If you’ve changed your address as well as your name, file form 8822 with the IRS.  This will let the IRS know that you have a new address.  You can download this form here, or order it by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).
  3. File a Change of Address Form with the U.S. Postal Service.
  4. Let your employer know that you’ve changed your name and/or address.  This will ensure receipt of your Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement after the end of the year.
  5. The IRS offers a FREE Withholding Calculator online.  To access the calculator click here.  Your income combined with your spouse’s may place you in a higher tax bracket. The Withholding Calculator will assist you in determining the correct amount of withholding needed for your new filing status and it will provide you with a new Form W-4, which you can print out and give it to your employer so they can withhold the correct amount from your pay.
