State Return Filing Due Dates

Okay, so everyone knows that you have to file your Federal Income Taxes by April 15.  What about state returns?

Here’s something interesting… Almost every state that is close to Virginia has to file by April 15 as well.  EXCEPT Virginia and Delaware!  Virginia and Delaware have filing due dates of May 1 and April 30, respectively.  But, Alabama, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and West Virginia all have filing due dates of April 15.

You’d be surprised at how many people e-file their Federal return and decide they’ll wait to file their State – especially in Virginia where the due-date is later than the Federal.  You’d also be surprised how many people FORGET to file their state return in time because of this.  If you are waiting to file because you owe state taxes, well, filing early doesn’t mean you have to pay early.  You can simply hold your payment until the due date!  And if you forget to file, then you’ll owe not only the tax, but also interest and penalties.
